10 cm (4 inches) of plain stockinette stitch on 6 mm (US 10) needles = 14 stitches
10 cm (4 inches) of colorwork on 6.5 mm (US 10.5) needles = 14 stitches
Most knitters knit tighter in colorwork than in plain stockinette stitch. Therefore, I have included in the pattern that you should go up half a needle size when knitting colorwork. Gauge varies from person to person, so always knit a swatch before you begin.
