Gauge
10 cm stockinette stitch with one color, 3.5 mm needles = 22 stitches
10 cm colorwork with 4 mm needles = 22 stitches
Most knitters knit tighter when doing colorwork than when knitting stockinette stitch with one color. Therefore, I have included in the pattern that you should go up half a needle size when knitting colorwork. Gauge varies from person to person, and always knit a swatch before you begin.
