Gauge

10 cm of single-color stockinette stitch on 4.5 mm needles = 18 stitches

10 cm of pattern knitting on 5 mm needles = 18 stitches

Most people knit tighter when doing colorwork than when knitting single-color stockinette stitch. Therefore, I have included in the pattern that you should go up half a needle size when knitting colorwork. Gauge varies from person to person, so always knit a swatch before you begin.
