Matoaka polar fleece (digital pattern). This is a 2-in-1 pattern with high and low neck and a polar hood version. The pattern for Matoaka was first published in my first book, Wilderness Sweaters from 2019.
Now I've made a chunky version with a circular hem for colder days. The sweater is knitted in Troll or Blåne, but you can use other yarns such as Alafosslopi if you want a water-resistant sweater.
See all yarn packs for Matoaka polar here.
Many people have asked for yarn alternatives for everyday use, which is why I've included this in the pattern.
The sweater is worked in the round, from the bottom up. Body and sleeves are worked separately before being joined together Pinne when knitting the yoke. Matoaka polar is a thick and comfortable sweater that can be knitted as a low or high neck sweater, or as a polar hood version. The Matoaka Polar hood has a hood and extra length on the ball so that you are dressed for extra cold days. Matoaka Polar should have a range of movement of between 10-15 cm. Measure around your chest and add 10-15 cm to the width of the garment to find your size. Have fun knitting!
Size XS (S) M (L) XL (XXL)
Knitting gauge
10 cm stocking stitch on Pinne 6 (6.5) 6 (6.5) 6 (6.5) 6 (6.5) mm= 14 (13) 14 (13) 14 (13) 14 (13) stitches
10 cm pattern stitch on Pinne 7 (7.5) 7 (7.5) 7 (7.5) 7 (7.5) mm= 14 (13) 14 (13) 14 (13) 14 (13) stitches
(The stated needle size is only a guide. If you get more stitches than stated on 10 cm, increase one needle size. If you get fewer stitches than stated on 10 cm, go down one needle size).
NOTE! It is easy to knit the yoke tighter with three colors and long leaps. I have therefore added in the pattern that you should change to Pinne 7 (7.5) 7 (7.5) 7 (7.5) 7 (7.5) mm when knitting the pattern to maintain a gauge of 14 (13) 14 (13) 14 (13) 14 (13) stitches in 10 cm. Everyone knits differently and it is therefore important that you check your gauge on patterns as well as plain stockinette stitch.
Yarn: Troll and/or Blåne from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk. The sweater can also be knitted in Alafosslopi. Alafosslopi is a thicker yarn than Troll and Blåne, so you can go down half a row from what is stated. Alafosslopi also has a slightly shorter yarn length.
Yarn quantity: For polar cap version (with hood and extra length) calculate about 150 grams extra of base color.
